Temperament
Despite their large size, they are excellent with children and other pets, making them one of the best family dogs. They are social by nature and do not do well when left alone for long periods. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them easy to train, but they do require early socialization to ensure they grow into well-rounded adults.

Health
Newfoundlands are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can lead to mobility issues later in life. They are also at risk of developing heart conditions such as subaortic stenosis (SAS), which should be monitored regularly. Due to their thick, water-resistant coats, they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and require proper hydration and shade in warm weather. Bloat is another significant health concern, requiring careful feeding practices to reduce the risk.
